Schiit Audio has launched the second generation of its well-regarded external DAC, now designated as Gungnir 2. This updated model features a balanced multi-bit Multiform architecture and includes two USB ports, one of which is a new high-speed Unison 384 input. Additionally, it boasts a modular design, a characteristic taken from the flagship Yggdrasil+, and offers compatibility with Forkbeard, a remote control interface developed for Schiit Audio.
The Schiit Audio Gungnir 2 DAC enhances Schiit Audio's multi-bit technology by incorporating a new balanced analog multiplication stage alongside four medical and defense-grade DAC8812CRUZ digital-to-analog converters. This setup features a proprietary digital filter optimized for both time and frequency domains, utilizing an Analog Devices DSP. Additionally, users have the option to select a No-Oversampling (NOS) mode, allowing them to bypass the digital filter if they choose.
The Gungnir 2 DAC is equipped with two USB inputs, enabling simultaneous connection of multiple USB sources, such as a network streamer alongside a PC, Mac, or smartphone, all through a single external DAC.
The Unison 384 offers PCM audio decoding capabilities of up to 32-bit/384 kHz, supports DXD (Digital Xtreme Definition) format, and includes upsampling features. Additionally, the Schiit Audio Gungnir 2 DAC is designed with a removable analog card, fully modular input and processing boards, and allows for system firmware updates via Wi-Fi or SD card. This design ensures that the Gungnir 2 is prepared for future enhancements without the need to send it back to Schiit Audio for factory updates.
The Gungnir 2 DAC is fully compatible with Forkbeard, offering features such as system-wide control, widgets, OTA updates, and additional functionalities. To utilize this, connect the Forkbeard module to the rear of the Gungnir 2 and install the mobile application, currently available only for iOS.
The Schiit Audio Gungnir 2 external DAC is manufactured in the United States. The majority of its components, such as the chassis and circuit boards, are sourced from American companies. All assembly, quality assurance, and testing processes, which include comprehensive instrument testing and thorough listening evaluations, take place at Schiit Audio's facility located in San Antonio, Texas.
