Schiit Modi 5 DAC: American-Built Sound That Punches Above Its Price

According to Schiit co-founder Jason Stoddard, Mesh is the key ingredient that makes the Modi 5 special.

Mesh is Schiit’s custom digital filter, optimized in both the time and frequency domains, designed to sound far closer to the company’s flagship DACs than the price tag would suggest. The clever bit? Schiit figured out how to run this advanced filter on a 32-bit Microchip processor, paired with a proven ESS delta-sigma modulator—keeping costs down without sacrificing sound quality.

In other words: no off-the-shelf shortcuts, no generic filtering, and no “good enough” solutions.

The Modi 5 is flexible by design. You can power it directly via USB for a clean, simple desktop setup while still using USB, optical, or coaxial inputs. But if you want to squeeze out extra performance, there’s more.

Plug in an external power supply and the Modi 5 switches to Linear Override mode, bypassing the switching supply and running on a higher-voltage, regulated linear rail. The result is higher output levels, more headroom, and better dynamics—a rare feature at this price point.

As always, Schiit keeps things close to home. The Modi 5 is designed and manufactured in the USA, with SMD assembly handled at Schiit’s own facility in Corpus Christi, Texas. The metal enclosures are made in California, reinforcing the brand’s commitment to local production rather than anonymous outsourcing.
