FiiO has launched a new over-ear headphone called the FT13. The new FT13 features earcups crafted from South American purple hardwood. The FT13's low impedance makes it easy to drive, making it suitable not only for hi-fi components but also for everyday portable devices like smartphones and tablets.
FiiO FT13: design and materials used
The earcups of the closed-back FiiO FT13 headphones are special, crafted from South American purpleheart wood. This hardwood is exceptionally dense and resilient, which FiiO claims minimizes resonance. Natural oxidation causes the wood to change color to a deep purple over time. The wood undergoes a 90-day aging process and is then meticulously crafted, sanded, and polished. The headband is made of a magnesium alloy and covered with soft lambskin.
The FiiO FT13's earcup houses a 60-millimeter dynamic driver with a wood fiber and wool composite diaphragm. This diaphragm construction is inspired by traditional papermaking techniques and is reinforced with carbon fiber. The W-shaped diaphragm design increases the vibration surface area and reduces distortion. The specified frequency response ranges from 7 Hz to 40 kHz, and the sensitivity is 113 dB.
FiiO FT13: closed earcups and noise reduction
As closed-back headphones, the FiiO FT13 not only utilizes the isolating effect of the wooden housing but also features passive damping. This includes a special resonance chamber, sound-dampening cotton, and a U-shaped damping tube, a design that, according to the designers, reduces ambient noise by up to 26 dB. At the same time, the closed-back design prevents sound leakage.

With a low impedance of 32 ohms, the FiiO FT13 closed-back headphones are easy to control and ready for immediate use with mobile devices. The flexible three-axis suspension and ergonomically shaped ear cushions made of lambskin or optional suede ensure high wearing comfort.
The cable features a silver-plated monocrystalline copper cable, four interchangeable audio connectors (3.5mm stereo mini-jack, 6.35mm stereo jack, 4.4mm Pentaconn, 4-pin XLR) and a canvas storage bag.
FiiO FT13: price and delivery information
The FiiO FT13 is expected to begin shipping soon. The suggested retail price is just under €330.
