In the ever-evolving world of in-ear monitors, iBasso has decided to go all-in with the new Epitome—a model that doesn’t exactly do things halfway. With a staggering 20 drivers per ear, this is one of those designs that immediately sparks curiosity: is this overkill, or something genuinely special?
A Hybrid Approach
The Epitome combines balanced armature (BA) and electrostatic (EST) drivers in a complex multi-driver setup. Each earpiece houses 8 electrostatic drivers and 12 balanced armatures, all managed by a five-way crossover.

The design includes 8 electrostatic and 12 balanced armature drivers per side. Sonion EST modules handle ultra-high frequencies, Knowles BA handle high frequencies, Sonion BA handles midrange and mid-high frequencies, and a separate balanced armature unit handles low frequencies. This separation allows for control and coordination of the various frequencies.
On paper, it’s a carefully structured system:
- Sonion EST drivers handle the ultra-high frequencies
- Knowles BA drivers take care of the highs
- Sonion BA drivers cover mids and upper mids
- A dedicated BA unit manages the low end
The idea is simple: divide and conquer. By assigning specific frequency ranges to specialized drivers, iBasso aims for better control, clarity, and separation across the spectrum.
Designed to Stand Out
The housings are 3D-printed and finished with a layered faceplate that creates a subtle iridescent effect depending on the light. It’s not overly flashy, but definitely eye-catching in a refined way—something that feels appropriate for a flagship-style IEM.
Comfort-wise, the shells are relatively lightweight at 6.2 grams per earpiece, which is impressive considering the hardware packed inside.
Practical Touches
iBasso keeps things flexible with a standard 0.78 mm 2-pin connector, making cable swaps easy for enthusiasts.
Included in the box is a 5N copper Litz cable with interchangeable plugs:
- 4.4 mm balanced
- 3.5 mm single-ended
- USB-C
That last option is especially convenient if you’re pairing directly with modern devices without a dedicated DAC.

The iBasso Epitome feels like a product built around ambition—pushing the limits of what a multi-driver IEM can be. Whether all 20 drivers translate into a cohesive listening experience is, of course, the real question.
But one thing is certain: in a crowded high-end IEM market, the Epitome definitely lives up to its name—it’s not trying to blend in.
