Italian hi-fi manufacturer Gold Note has unveiled the HP-5.2, a new high-end headphone amplifier designed to bring studio-style control and true Class-A performance to modern headphone listening. Rather than treating headphones as a secondary use case, the HP-5.2 is built around the idea that personal listening deserves the same level of precision, adaptability, and refinement as a full-scale loudspeaker system.

With its fully symmetrical dual-mono architecture, extensive analog tuning features, and both wired and wireless connectivity, the HP-5.2 aims to serve as a central hub for serious headphone users—whether in a dedicated hi-fi setup, a desktop system, or a hybrid environment.

Class-A dual-mono design for clean, stable power

At the core of the HP-5.2 is a fully discrete Class-A circuit, laid out in a symmetrical dual-mono configuration. Each channel is electrically isolated, minimizing crosstalk and ensuring stable, low-noise operation. The amplifier delivers up to 5 watts of output power, making it suitable for a wide range of headphones—from sensitive in-ear monitors to demanding planar magnetic designs.

The focus is not just on raw power, but on maintaining linearity and control under dynamic conditions. By operating in Class-A, the HP-5.2 keeps the output stage continuously biased, which Gold Note says contributes to smoother transients, better micro-detail, and a more natural tonal balance.

The Gold Note HP-5.2 high-end headphone amplifier is based on a fully discrete Class-A circuit, built with consistent symmetrical and dual-mono design.

Analog studio tools for headphone optimization

One of the defining features of the HP-5.2 is its extensive analog control section. Rather than conventional tone controls, the amplifier offers studio-style adjustment tools designed to optimize the interaction between amplifier and headphones.

Key functions include:

  • Crossfeed to simulate a more speaker-like soundstage

  • Harman and Superflat response modes for targeted frequency compensation

  • Adjustable gain and balance

  • Variable damping factor to fine-tune electrical behavior with different headphone loads

These features are designed as practical optimization tools rather than sonic effects, allowing users to adapt the amplifier to different headphone designs while maintaining consistent, controlled performance.

The ample power reserve ensures that the amplifier remains within its linear operating range, even with dynamically demanding material.

Analog, digital, and wireless connectivity

While the HP-5.2 is fundamentally an analog Class-A design, it also accommodates modern sources. The rear panel includes both RCA and balanced XLR inputs for traditional hi-fi components.

For digital sources, a USB-C input with an integrated DAC based on the ESS SABRE ES9023 chip allows direct connection to computers and streamers. The amplifier also supports Bluetooth 5.2 with aptX and aptX HD codecs, providing a high-quality wireless option for everyday listening.

This combination of inputs allows the HP-5.2 to function equally well in classic stereo systems, desktop rigs, or flexible multi-source setups.

Multiple headphone outputs and preamp capability

The front panel offers a comprehensive selection of headphone connections:

  • 3.5 mm stereo mini-jack

  • 6.3 mm stereo jack

  • 4.4 mm balanced Pentaconn

  • 4-pin balanced XLR

In addition to its role as a headphone amplifier, the HP-5.2 can also function as a line preamplifier, with all analog adjustment features remaining active. An integrated bypass mode allows the unit to be inserted into existing systems without disrupting the signal chain, making it easy to switch between headphone and speaker listening.

Touchscreen operation with remote control

Despite its technical depth, the HP-5.2 is designed for straightforward everyday use. A central touchscreen display provides access to all settings, supported by a precision rotary encoder on the front panel and a supplied remote control.

This interface allows quick switching between headphones or listening profiles, making the amplifier particularly practical for users with multiple pairs.

Price and availability

Gold Note has not yet announced the official price of the HP-5.2. According to the manufacturer, pricing will be confirmed closer to launch, with availability expected in the first half of 2026.
