Onkyo has announced the two-channel receiver TX-8470. The new TX-8470 is basically a two-channel amplifier, but the device is equipped with several HDMI connections, two pairs of speaker connections, analogue cinch inputs, digital inputs and even a turntable input. Onkyo seems to have made the TX-8470 for music lovers and movie enthusiasts who do not need multi-channel sound.

Onkyo TX-8470: versatile two-channel amplifier

The TX-8470 has amplifiers on board that operate in 110 Watts per channel and eight Ohms, according to the manufacturer's specifications. The Class G amplifier provides efficient, accurate reproduction of audio signals across the entire frequency range through a low negative feedback (NFB) design. According to the designers, this provides more transparency and musicality. The heart of the on-board DA converter is a DAC chip from AKM that can process music signals up to a resolution of 32-bit 768 kHz.

Connection to a network can be made with a UTP cable or wirelessly via WiFi. Bluetooth is also supported, as are Google Chromecast and Apple AirPlay. For a two-channel receiver, a more than usual amount of four HDMI connections have been installed with support for HDMI-ARC, 8K/40 Gbps video support. Furthermore, three S/PDIF connections are mounted, namely 2 x optical and 1 x coaxial cinch for audio only. Gold-plated speaker terminals and audio-grade capacitors deliver clear sound, while carefully selected copper components support high current and minimize vibration, resulting in superior sound reproduction and a richer listening experience. The TX-8470 is a two-channel device and is not suitable for decoding or passing through Dolby or DTS surround sound.

No, the device seems to be aimed more at music lovers than at fans of multi-channel (film) sound. After all, a turntable input has been mounted that is suitable for both MM cartridges and MC cartridges. The phono amplifier is constructed with discrete op amp circuits and isolated circuits that protect against unwanted distortions to improve clarity and audio performance.

Then there is also the extensive radio functionality of the TX-8470 in the form of an AM/FM tuner and the very extensive streaming functionality with support for Spotify, Amazon Music HD, Tidal, Deezer, TuneIn radio and Pandora. The TX-8470 carries the Works with Sonos label and is Roon Ready.
