FiiO M33: Portable R2R Player Blurring the Line Between DAP and Desktop DAC

FiiO M33 is a new Android-based R2R music player with balanced outputs, Snapdragon 680, Desktop Mode, and up to 1100 mW of power.

With the M33, FiiO takes a bold step by combining classic R2R digital-to-analog conversion with a fully modern Android platform. Designed to work equally well as a portable high-end player and a compact desktop source, the M33 targets listeners who want musical R2R tonality without giving up streaming, DSP flexibility, or raw output power.

At its core, the M33 runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 platform with Android 13, backed by 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. This provides enough headroom for demanding music apps, multitasking, and long-term firmware support. USB audio duties are handled by a dedicated XMOS XU316 controller, while FiiO’s own FPGA and dual femtosecond oscillators take care of clock management and jitter suppression.

Fully Differential R2R Architecture

The heart of the M33 is FiiO’s newly developed 24-bit fully differential complementary R2R matrix. Unlike delta-sigma designs, the R2R architecture focuses on precise resistor matching and linearity, aiming for a more natural, analog-like sound presentation.

The analog stage follows a complex, multi-stage topology built around Texas Instruments components. FiiO employs a four-level audio architecture and no fewer than eight high-precision operational amplifiers, ensuring clean signal amplification with high current capability and low noise.

DSP, Digital Outputs, and System-Wide Control

Despite its purist DAC architecture, the M33 is anything but limited when it comes to digital processing. It supports a global 10-band parametric EQ, Auto EQ, full SRC bypass across the entire system, and an All-to-DSD mode for users who prefer DSD processing.

Digital connectivity is equally comprehensive, with low-jitter coaxial output, USB audio output, and full digital transport functionality, making the M33 suitable as a source component in larger hi-fi systems.

Serious Power, Balanced and Unbalanced

For headphones, the M33 offers both a 3.5 mm single-ended output and a 4.4 mm balanced output. Power output reaches up to 470 mW + 470 mW from the unbalanced jack and an impressive 1100 mW + 1100 mW from the balanced output, putting the M33 firmly in “desktop-class” territory for a portable device.

A dedicated Desktop Mode allows the player to be used as a fixed source, bypassing battery constraints and optimizing performance for stationary listening.

Battery, Display, and Design

Power comes from a 4400 mAh battery with fast-charging support even at low temperatures. Charging takes roughly 1.5 hours, while battery life is rated at up to 14 hours via the 3.5 mm output and 12.5 hours via the balanced output. FiiO notes that future firmware updates may further improve efficiency.

The front is dominated by a 5.5-inch display with an 18:9 aspect ratio, protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and finished with an oleophobic coating. A factory-applied screen protector is included. Around the back, matte AG glass adds a refined, understated look. Despite its solid construction, the M33 weighs in at a manageable 258 grams.

Pricing and Availability

The FiiO M33 is compatible with Retro Box accessories and is expected to launch in multiple color options. In China, the anticipated price is around 4,000 yuan ($570), with sales scheduled to begin in January. International pricing and availability have yet to be confirmed.

With its mix of R2R conversion, high output power, and a modern Android ecosystem, the FiiO M33 positions itself as one of the most technically ambitious portable players in its class.
