Canton has a long history of blending engineering precision with emotional storytelling, and its latest special edition loudspeaker continues that tradition. The new Reference 9 GS Edition isn’t just another variant in the company’s flagship Reference lineup—it’s a personal tribute to the man who started it all, Canton founder Günther Seitz.
With this release, Canton takes one of its most refined standmount speakers and elevates it further, borrowing critical technologies from the company’s statement Reference Alpha series. The result is a compact monitor that carries both emotional significance and serious technical upgrades under the hood.

The GS Edition of the Reference 9 features upgraded MKP crossover components, DLC tweeters with acoustic lenses, and premium WBT NextGen binding posts derived from Canton’s flagship Reference Alpha series.
A tradition of personal editions
Over the years, Canton has occasionally released special “personal” versions of its Reference speakers, each tied to key figures within the company. These models are more than cosmetic exercises; they usually introduce subtle but meaningful refinements drawn from higher up in the lineup.
The Reference 9 GS Edition follows that same philosophy. It uses the proven architecture of the standard Reference 9 standmount, but incorporates selected components and technologies from Canton’s top-tier designs—essentially distilling flagship know-how into a more compact, living-room-friendly format.

The high-frequency unit uses a diamond-like carbon (DLC) diaphragm paired with an advanced acoustic lens, designed for low distortion, wide dispersion, and precise imaging.
Crossover upgrades from the Reference Alpha
The most significant technical change lies inside the cabinet. The GS Edition features an upgraded crossover network that adopts high-quality MKP capacitors derived from the Reference Alpha models.
In high-end loudspeaker design, the crossover is often as important as the drivers themselves. By using higher-grade capacitors with tighter tolerances and lower losses, Canton aims to improve:
-
Signal purity
-
Micro-detail retrieval
-
Phase accuracy
-
Overall tonal coherence
The goal isn’t to dramatically alter the character of the Reference 9, but to refine it—making the presentation cleaner, more transparent, and more controlled across the frequency range.
Advanced tweeter technology with DLC diaphragm
Another key upgrade is the use of tweeters with DLC (diamond-like carbon) diaphragms. This material is known for combining extreme stiffness with low mass, which helps reduce distortion and maintain control at high frequencies.
The tweeters are paired with Canton’s latest acoustic lens design. This element is engineered to optimize dispersion, ensuring a wide, even soundstage and consistent tonal balance across the listening area.

High-quality WBT NextGen speaker terminals ensure optimal signal transfer, complementing the upgraded crossover network for improved clarity, phase accuracy, and overall sonic refinement.
Signal path refinements and premium connectors
Attention to detail continues at the rear of the speaker. The Reference 9 GS Edition is fitted with WBT NextGen binding posts, a well-known choice in the high-end world.
These connectors are designed to minimize eddy currents and contact resistance, ensuring that the signal arriving from the amplifier reaches the crossover with as little loss or coloration as possible. It’s a small detail on paper, but one that fits the GS Edition’s philosophy of incremental, meaningful upgrades.
Visually, the GS Edition remains true to the elegant, understated design language of the Reference series. However, Canton introduces a new Sand finish, created specifically for this edition, alongside the standard Reference 9 color options.
For those who prefer a more traditional aesthetic, a walnut veneer version is also available, offering a warmer, classic look that fits naturally into a wide range of interiors.
Despite its relatively modest footprint, the Reference 9 GS Edition is positioned as a serious high-end monitor. With its upgraded crossover, advanced tweeter technology, and premium connectors, it aims to deliver a level of refinement usually associated with much larger—and more expensive—speakers.
This makes it an appealing option for listeners who want reference-grade performance in smaller rooms, nearfield setups, or elegant two-channel systems where floorstanders might be impractical.
Price and availability
The Canton Reference 9 GS Edition is available at the following recommended retail prices (per pair):
-
€5,000 for standard finishes, including the new Sand color
-
€5,500 for the walnut veneer version
